DEE ROZE: A RESURGENCE OF R&B

Depending on who you ask, many will agree that R&B music has been at a disadvantage for quite some time. A lot of the formula many had grown used to throughout the years has been lost in the process. Most will agree that you just don’t get a lot of the same quality anymore when it comes to the new projects we see. Surely, a lot of that has much to do with the “microwave society” that has resulted within the music industry. It no longer takes as much work to put together a project and get it out to music fans. Most artists are handling the entire process of recording, producing, so on and so forth, so they don’t have producers and engineers and A&R in their ears, saying this is good and this is bad. It’s mostly up to the artist now to make all the decisions when it comes to what the fans get, and unfortunately, the industry has suffered as a whole.

It’s always a joy when I come across an artist who actually gets it, and lives by the process that existed some time ago and we had all become used to. With this feature, we’re thrilled to introduce you R&B Singer & Songwriter Dee Roze. He’s worked steady over the past few years at building a solid reputation and following for himself as a new artist. His recently collaboration with the ladies of June’s Diary has definitely broadened his reach with music fans, and many are now anticipating music from him. Currently working on his debut album, he’s tiding fans over with his remake of R. Kelly’s classic album 12 Play. We recently had some time to talk about that undertaking, as well as the process of recording and organizing his official debut to the world.

Dee Roze: I wanted to say it’s a privilege to be on the call with you brother. I really appreciate it.

James: No problem at all. As I listened to your music, and listened to some of the songs you’ve remade, like R. Kelly’s and Part Time Lover from H-Town. You make mention of the people who have come before you. Who were some of the people you came up listening to when building your own style?

2D54FA48-FF89-4464-BD63-8F3C660D7D40.JPG

Dee Roze: I go back as far as James Brown, Luther, Donnie Hathaway, and down the line to Stevie, R. Kelly, and Babyface. I pattern my writing after them because they had a blueprint of what works. That genre of music - I’ve been on tour with those guys and I see the money that comes in from it. People get sidetracked with the rap because that’s what gets pushed to the commercial outlets, but R&B and Soul makes a lot of money. You and I see that these guys are selling out.

James: I think the reason this genre good, especially artists like Keith Sweat, and so on, they offered so much substance. You can see the difference when yo stand it up against what comes out today. It’s not to put anyone down, but the facts are there to see. There was a song you were doing on YouTube, and while I can’t remember the name of it, I could hear the passion in your voice. You remind me of the greats of the nineties like K-Ci and JoJo. It’s a good thing that you have more of an old soul. What goes into putting together your music?

Dee Roze: I definitely like to piggyback off K-Ci, because he’s my closest brother in this industry, and Fantasia would be my closest sister in this. He’s a king for allowing me to do that. In my process, I don’t write down anything. I turn the music on and it just pours out. I’ll reveal it all when we start moving around more. Music speaks to me in a different language. Just like on one of June’s Diary’s songs, I didn’t write. Sometimes I don’t even have a track - I just go.

James: I certainly get it man. I think there’s a lot of people like you and I who just get it. For a lot of artists, this is all just a hustle, versus it being “life” for you. It’s in your heart. Where does your inspiration come from?

Dee Roze: I think Kristal and I have talked about it. I had to come to the conclusion and be humble that I was chosen for this. And God is using me as a vessel. It’s my purpose. It’s what I was put here to do. I don’t go through infidelity or drama, but I can look at everyone else’s life and put it out like I’m actually going through it. I have to be able to display that. It’s just like the song “Black Man”, I wasn’t even going to do it. I did a project called “12 Play Again”, which was based on R. Kelly’s album. Bad Man was not going to be remade, but there was a kid who was killed in Philly by the police. That night, I was recording something else. Kristal came in and told me about that, and it just came to me to rewrite Bad Man and we did the video the next day. I always allow God to use me. To people’s defense, if they’re not on that beat, they don’t understand what’s going on, or how this dude sound this good. I’m sure the greats like Marvin Gaye went through their trials, but I keep going and trusting God. Don’t get it wrong, I am a street guy, but I roll with God.

James: I get it man. A lot of us have both sides to offer, and it just shows who you are. The track stood out to me vocally. Obviously you’re still growing, but I felt the track was good. On the YouTube video, you were explaining how you specifically wanted to do twenty-one tracks for your album. Why was that?

Dee Roze: I wanted like a two-sided album. I wanted up-tempos, the club joints, and then the more old school side. I put certain R&B joints on there with hip-hop joints.

James: I think it’s good to have your album in this way, especially when it allows you to perform it LIVE with a band. What’s the album timeline?

Dee Roze: I have a few songs that’s out. Right now, considering I was in a group for a while, I’m building a brand as a solo artist. Thank God my cousin Cam came along. He really hit the ground running with building my brand. Thank God I received the placement with June’s Diary. I have a few other collaborations that will be coming out. I’m just building my brand.

James: This is great man. You’re humble, and you’re doing the groundwork. The placement with June’s Diary is perfect because your journey mirrors there. You both have worked hard to get to where you are.

Dee Roze: Right. I’ve never been the type to piggyback off my wife. I get a lot of throwback saying I’m holding her back, and so forth. I stay out of her business, but when she rings that bell, I show up and show out for my baby. Kristal is a bold lady. She can stand on her own. She handles her business, and we have a mutual agreement of trust and honor in our relationship.

James: I think you’re doing amazing things. You have a great product. In the past I’ve been pretty critical with rising artists, and I can see where you’ve put in the work. I think you’ll go very far. What do you want people to get from your album?

Dee Roze: I want people to love again, make love, and start a new generation of a different thought process. I want people to be in love and have joy. My music is for everybody. I haven’t even gotten into the process of what it’s going to be. I listen to Bruno Mars; I listen to The Weeknd, but you hit it dead on the nail on the head with R. Kelly. It took me redoing 12 Play to realize I wasn’t tripping. I was re-recording the greatest artist of all times. I saw the LIVE show for two years and we started building a relationship. We had the same manager, and then we started playing ball together. We were going to the studio together until everything started happening. I’m praying for that brother and everybody involved.

James: I think it’s great again man. Where can people find you online?

Dee Roze: Well again, my name is Dee Roze. If you just google my name, my music is on all platforms. I also have a website that’s being worked on, and it’ll be back up in a few weeks, and I’m on Instagram. Cam is great. He literally left his house in North Carolina and came to Atlanta with me.

James: I get it man. It’s all part of the hustle and the journey. Not many people will do that, so it’s great you have him. He was willing to take that leap, and honestly those are usually the ones who make it first. He’s taking that sacrifice, and it’ll definitely help your career. You have the perfect persona for this industry and I believe you’ll do well. I’m so appreciative for you guys. Are there any type of final comments?

Dee Roze: Please continue to support my beautiful wife Kristal and her group June’s Diary, my uncle Frank, who has given me a lifeline of opportunity, and I’m blessed to help these ladies continue fulfilling their dreams. We’re off to the races man! It’s a blessing!

But this is not a cradle song — instead, all those soft textures serve as a backdrop for Raheem DeVaughn’s pointed reflection on racist violence." Elias Leight from RollingStone.com

"This time-period piece of visual art is a tribute to the musical icon & legend Marvin Gaye. In celebration of his birthday and artistry I recorded the song “Marvin Used To Say” back in 2020Later this year I plan to release a entire album in honor of him as well."

GLOBAL PREMIERE - BSE RECORDINGS Presents SECRET GARDEN Music Video featuring OMAR WILSON, SISQO’, RAHEEM DEVAUGHN and SHAWN STOCKMAN

IMG_0301.jpeg

Thirty years ago, music fans were blown away by the song “Secret Garden”, originally recorded by Quincy Jones and featuring Al B. Sure, James Ingram, El DeBarge, and Barry White. The song was a part of Jones’ project “Back on the Block”, and peaked on Billboard’s Black Singles charts for one week back in 1990.

Now, the single has been remade by yet another group of legendary crooners; Omar Wilson, Sisqo, Raheem DeVaughn, and Shawn Stockman. The newest rendition of Quincy Jones’ gem is available now on all streaming and download platforms, via the BSE Recordings/SONY Music/Orchard label imprint. The amazingly beautiful visuals to SECRET GARDEN were directed and shot by famed video director, Derek Blanks.

Earlier this fall, SECRET GARDEN made its audio world premiere on RollingStone.com. to rave reviews. “The Secret Garden” is getting an all-star update courtesy of Sisqo (known for his solo hits and time in Dru Hill), Shawn Stockman (Boyz II Men), Raheem DeVaughn, and Omar Wilson. The four singers are careful to stay faithful to Jones’ original arrangement for “The Secret Garden,” keeping the unhurried tempo and gently probing guitars, adding only some extra thunk in the drums and a hint of programmed hi-hats. Arika KaneLou Humphrey, and Jasmon Joyner served as producers on the new version of the track,“ mentions Rolling Stone. The song was written by Quincy JonesSiedah GarrettRod Temperton and El DeBarge.

To perform this classic with this caliber of artists was an honor. I wanted to preserve the integrity of the part of one of my heroes, (El Debarge). I hope he enjoys what I’ve done”, mentions Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men. “I am extremely excited to be part of a Quincy Jones classic originally performed by legendary artist like Al B Sure, James Ingram, El DeBarge and Barry White. This was a no-brainer for me,” says Sisqo.

This rendition of SECRET GARDEN, will also appear on the upcoming sophomore album from Omar Wilson, entitled “OMAR WILSON SINGS THE CLASSICS,” to be released spring 2021.

Shawn stockman releases Visuals for his new single, ‘all i do’….

IMG_4361.jpeg

Just a month after releasing his solo debut, ‘’Foreword’, Shawn Stockman has released visuals for his new single, ‘All I Do’.

All I Do" is one of the most popular songs on Shawn's debut solo album FOREWORD. The song is currently racing up the Adult R&B Radio charts and is already #2 on SiriusXM Heart & Soul and #1 on MusicChoice!

view HERE!

The video is a tribute to powerful women of color not only in Shawn's life, but those that have inspired him. Shawn explains it best, "If this year has shown us anything, it’s what and whom we should be grateful for. This is my way of paying homage to the “riders”. The ones who build and do not destroy. The ones who nurture and care for, with such grace and a flyness that the rest of the world looks on in amazement!"

About the song Shawn adds, "'All I Do', is about a relationship that has seen its share of problems, yet instead of it withering away it gets even better with age," explains Shawn. "I think we focus too much on being in a 'relationship' and not enough on being a friend to the one you love. This song is about a friendship between two people devoted to staying with each other forever!"

Shawn Stockman released his anticipated album, "Foreword" to rave reviews. The 11-track collection of original songs was released via the SRG ILS/UMG label imprint. FOREWORD includes production and writing collaborations with Tim KelleyRaphael SaadiqErik "Blu2th" Griggsand Antonio Dixon.

The song “Angry Black Woman“, was born from an outpouring of emotions felt regarding the continued police brutality towards black people…my people. I wanted to give a voice to the hurt, pain, frustration and anger that I myself and so many of us are feeling right now. Whether we realize it or not, the cause of inhumane treatment will always create an imbalanced effect and unrest for all of us, mentally, spiritually, physically and emotionally. We must have justice or there will be no peace,“ mentions Terry Ellis.

And to think that this song was created after the album was already completed, is an extra enforcement in the message of the song... all of us uniting as one."

ABOUT RHYAN LAMARR

A true renaissance man. That’s what Rhyan LaMarr proves with the release of his debut musical project, aPERFECTmess. The Chicago-based artist taps into his first love of music to tell his life story through 20 tracks bringing together a list of who’s who in the industry. A cross between DJ Khaled-esque curation and Quincy Jones-like craftsmanship, the album unites voices from across genres and regions, including skits from radio personalities Sway and Charlamagne Tha Godto tell LaMarr’s story of hope and perseverance. aPERFECTmess holds dual meaning to describe the mashup nature of the music and LaMarr’s personal journey enduring homelessness on his way toward establishing himself as a reputable filmmaker.

Lead single “Stayed Down” enlists 1K PhewSocial Club MisfitsJack RedMico Wave and Chi-Town legend Twista for an epic posse cut. “The Remedy” brings listeners a reflective note with Jonathan Mcreynolds and Jack Red as LaMarr expresses gratitude for the light he found when he was at his darkest point.

It took me my whole life to make one album, but this album is my whole life,” he shares of aPERFECTmess.

Canal Street the film was released in 2019 and was LaMarr’s big break as a producer/director/screenwriter that gave him confidence to continue pursuing his artistry. It allowed him to travel across the country to share his story and build his own entertainment production company Red Guerilla Entertainment with fellow business partner Bishop Eric D. Garnes. After doing projects with late comedian Bernie Mac, Grammy-winning musician Common and Academy Award-winner George Clooney. He’s come a long way from having nothing but a pen and notepad.

LaMarr isn’t reinventing the wheel by combining his love of music and film. He’s following in the footsteps of Kanye WestPharrellJohn Legend and 50 Cent by taking ownership of his craft and putting in his own spin of positivity.

CLEVELAND’S OWN AVANT RETURNS WITH NEW HIT SINGLE, NEW ALBUM…

IMG_3990.jpeg

Avant

New album. CAN WE FALL IN LOVE, available July 10.

If you’re anything like us here at UGD, you been long awaiting the return of our very own Avant! It’s been a minute since this brother has hit us with a new jam, but we’re happy to report the wait is OVER!

Yes, Avant has a new single, AND a new album dropping.
"CAN WE FALL IN LOVE", is an open-letter with raw honesty and intensity. Returning once again to add his signature style, producer Travis Sayles (Dark Child Productions) joins forces with Avant's songwriting and lead vocals. The album will be available for release on Friday, July 10th, via the MO-B Entertainment/SRG ILS Group/UMG label imprint and is available for pre-orders now at CAN WE FALL IN LOVE. With the pre-sale download, fans are now able to exclusively download and stream to the new song, "EDIBLE"

A songwriter, producer, and label owner of MO-B Entertainment, Avant has traveled a long and steady path from being the first artist on Magic Johnson's record label to starting his own label. He is grateful to be in a unique situation in his career, maintaining control in business and creative freedom. Recently, AVANTachieved one of the biggest accomplishments in today's music industry as his catalog has been streamed over 1.8 Billion times on Pandora.

Featured songs such as "You Don't Love Me No More" reminds us of the challenges of maintaining adversities in relationships, says Avant. "I was having a spat with my lady," he recalls. "It's so many cell phones and distractions that take away your attention from a relationship. It makes you feel like, "Am I here for the kids, the bills--what is it?' I don't feel that presence of love anymore. I was going with that. I wanted to make sure it had a hip hop feel to it. I could've made it a full R&B song, but I didn't want to make another "Separated" either. I wanted to include old school R&B, with the harmonies and notes where they were placed with the horn. It gives you a feel of authentic soul music."

The Cleveland native steps back in time with "Not Gone Lose," a tribute to an era which Avant elegantly conveys bringing us back to when ballads were the cornerstone of bringing Black families together. He explains, "I'm speaking from our generation. If we want to go back to the Ray Charles or Smokey Robinson era, it had a pinch of the true soul to it. That's what I was going with on this album."
With standout songs, "All In My Head," "Edible," and "Take It Slow," both written to appeal to a cross-generational audience--it drives home why Avant is a dynamic songwriter.

For nearly two decades, AVANT has blazed a trail with hits, "Read Your Mind," "My First Love," and "Separated". "It's a different time in the world today and I’m trying to get people back to what real R&B is about. Not just making love but being in love, what happened to that? I think it's important that we delve back into those kinds of things," mentions AVANT.

AVANT remembers talking to the legendary singer, Charlie Wilson, where he offered him the best advice. "You should always keep your mind fresh, but you also want to stay with the people who know you. It’s important to stay involved with our generation and younger followers to keep my mind open," remembers Avant.

When many artists have fallen to the wayside, AVANT continues to stay consistent in creating great music. "Can We Fall In Love" is a testimony to why his fan-base is so loyal to his craft.

"I can't change who I am, so I have to give you exactly who Avant is all the time. That's my main goal when I sit down to record an album. I want to give you that interpretation of what this life is about," he adds. "This album is about the work the work that it takes to make a relationship work. There are good things and there are bad things, but if there is love, then that is the beginning of fixing the issues".

Shawn stockman: foreword

IMG_2578.jpeg

It’s an exciting time to be connecting with Shawn Stockman, who many of you know from years of being a member of Boyz II Men. After more than thirty years in the business, Shawn is at a pivotal moment in his career, as he embarks on a much anticipated solo journey. Most know foreword as being the introduction to a book, but that title fits this project so well. This is definitely a re-introduction for Shawn. Fans are now getting the opportunity to see what he’s made of as a soloist. No longer does he have the luxury of asking his bandmates if something sounds right, or whatever the case may be. He gets to figure it all out himself. Shawn has put together what I know will be heralded as an amazing project. I truly believe fans will agree that it’s well worth the wait. Shawn and I talk all about the album, the process of putting it together, how the coronavirus has affected his process, and more. We has a great conversation, and you can catch it all below!

Note: track back to our intro page to listen to full audio of our conversation!!!

Shawn Stockman: How you doing man?

U.G. Digital Magazine: I’m doing amazing man, how about you?

Shawn Stockman: I’m good, James, right?

U.G. Digital Magazine: Yep, I’m James.

Shawn Stockman: OK, Cool.

U.G. Digital Magazine: So listen, man. I’m majorly excited about this opportunity of connecting with you today. I look back over my life, and at my love of music, entertainment, and journalism, and I circle back to people like you who have truly have inspired me to do what I do and follow my dreams. I was in the 9th grade when Cooley High Harmony dropped, and I’m 42 now, so 30 years of classics man. I just remember not having a lot of money, but rushing to buy the cassette, and getting reamed for spending all of my money on the album [laughing]. I’m just appreciative for everything you’ve done for the industry, for the culture, and everything. You have truly inspired me to do what I do.

Shawn Stockman: Thank you for that man. Thank you. You know, stories like that never get old. A lot of people think it’s corny stuff to say, but I’ve seen and experienced enough to know what to appreciate and what to cherish. I’ve won a lot of things, but I’ve lost a lot of things too, James. It’s nice to know that even throughout these years, the work you put in is received. We all want to be appreciated. You saying these things is a blessing to me and a testament that what I’ve been doing all these years has not gone unnoticed. I mean it, so thank you for saying that to me and letting me know in some respect that I did something right.

U.G. Digital Magazine: I think a lot of times artists don’t truly get or understand how much they inspire. I just had a collision this past Saturday, and through all the mess that obviously comes with it, the exciting thing that kept me going is “I’m connecting with Shawn on Tuesday”. This all excites me that much.

Shawn Stockman: Aww man…

U.G. Digital Magazine: It’s cool though, and I try to start my conversations this way by saying thank you. A lot of people wouldn’t pursue their dreams in this way without people like you to look up to. You’re on your first solo release but it’s not the first album you’ve recorded….

Shawn Stockman: Well thank you so much, I’m glad you’re OK, but actually, this is the first album I’ve recorded. A lot of people think I’ve recorded an album before. I’ve recorded songs, but never a full length solo record. I’ve been on soundtracks, and special projects, but this is actually my first shot at this.

U.G. Digital Magazine: What brought you to that place now of wanting to do a solo project now?

Shawn Stockman: It’s about timing. Everything in life is about timing, and it just wasn’t the right time. It would have been cliché to try and do a solo record on the tail end of my group’s success. To me, that’s kinda advantageous and ambitious in a negative sense, because it’s living off the hype. My music would never have it’s fair shake because I’m popular in that moment. At that time, people would probably buy anything from me.

IMG_2580.jpeg

U.G. Digital Magazine: …then it’s like you’re competing with yourself as well.

Shawn Stockman: Well the truth is, you’re always competing with yourself. In this particular situation, it’s better because it’s not about anything else aside from me wanting to be creative, and me wanting to grow and develop as an artist and a person. As musicians, we go out on stage and our job is pretty much PR. We’re out there selling ourselves. Whether with my group or by myself, we’re selling ourselves to people for them to not only hear the songs, but enjoy us enough to come see us again. I put myself in this position because I wanted to see how it felt to not have the luxury of having two amazing singers by my side. I wanted to do this on my own, and this is a life lesson. Its not just about coming out with a solo record or making money, which is another reason I waited because it’s not about money. This isn’t about having to do this to pay the bills. The bills are paid. I wanted to do this because hopefully it will transcend me as an artist to be able to do things outside of what I’m most known for.

U.G. Digital Magazine: We won’t say hopefully though. It definitely will. I’ve heard seven of the eleven tracks, and it’s really amazing. I love the fact that it doesn’t sound like Boyz II Men. You have a lot of groups where the members venture out solo, but it sounds like the group. I think you have your own sound and now the fans get something new but equally amazing.

Shawn Stockman: Thank you. That was intentional. The intention was to let people know who I am as an artist and as a human being. This allowed me to stretch out. I didn’t have two other guys with me. It was just me, and even the process of recording the record, there were times, most times, when it was just me and the engineer. Sometimes it may be the producer, Tim Kelly, who produced a lot of songs, but there were also some that I did. That felt so nice to be in the studio and not have influence from anyone. I could sit there and introspect, and do what was best for me. At the end of the day I have to sing these songs so they have to come from a real place, so people don’t think I’m just singing a record that some producer made. I have to be involved in every song.

U.G. Digital: It comes across tremendously organic. It’s like it truly authentic, and it’s not anything that was just thrown together for you by other writers. It sounds natural.

Shawn Stockman: Thank you.

UG. Digital Magazine: It’s funny because I just gained access to the album yesterday, and I keep replaying it, thinking I may get something different each time I listen. The only thing that really changes are the favorites. Right before you called I was playing Shawn-Na-Na. Yesterday I started with All I Do, and from the first verse it was really dope. It’s not Boyz II Men. It’s really dope. I don’t know what I like the most.

Shawn Stockman: You don’t have to choose man. Like them all [laughing]...

U.G. Digital Magazine: I haven’t been in that place in such a long time where I’ve picked up an album, and the whole thing was dope. You worked with Raphael Saadiq on this project, which also drew me in. He’s someone that I buy anything he puts out. Boyz II Men, the same thing. I’m waiting to hear the other four tracks that aren’t on the teaser. I’m eager for that.

Shawn Stockman: I thank you for liking the songs that you do. Seven out of eleven ain’t bad.

U.G. Digital Magazine: Right.

Shawn Stockman: I’m doing good. If you don’t like the other four, I’m still in a good spot [laughing].

U.G. Digital Magazine: Well we know that won’t happen [laughing]. But you spoke abut life lessons. What have you learned from the solo experience?

Shawn Stockman: Patience. That’s the most important thing I’ve learned in life. Everything doesn’t always come when you want it to come. It doesn’t mean that because you didn’t get it, you won’t get something better along the way. I know it sounds corny, but it’s so real.

U.G. Digital Magazine: Maybe to somebody younger, but not to me at all man.

Shawn Stockman: Yea, real talk. I mean, because there’s a lot of things I expected to happen sooner, or I wanted it to happen sooner, or why isn’t this happening now? It’s because it was better happening at this point. So I learned patience. I learned how to just sometimes wait things out and allow things to happen naturally. Let God do his thing. Let him put certain pieces in place, and allow certain things to happen for the bigger picture to develop. That can only happen with patience. Every action doesn’t always require a reaction.

U.G. Digital Magazine: I like that. Sometimes you just have to sit and wait.

Shawn Stockman: Yep. You gotta wait. Just because somebody said something or did something to you doesn’t mean you have to do something to them. A lot of times, it just takes a moment to see who, what where, why, and when. You gotta do that. Patience is hard as well. A lot of times, everyone’s first reaction to someone’s action, especially if it’s negative, is to clap back. Sometimes you gotta wait and let God do it.

U.G. Digital Magazine: That’s perfect advice. I just want to hit on promotion a little. With so much happening with the Coronavirus, how has it affected your promotion?

Shawn Stockman: I hate to say this, but it’s actually better. It’s allowed people to actually focus on the music and artists that they normally wouldn’t have. The world moves fast. Everything happening has  actually slowed it down and allowed people to look around for a second and see, oh it’s not just about this artist. I’m not speaking just for myself. It’s helping a lot of other artists who may not have had the ability to promote, or the budget, or the means to do it. You know, people being able to sit and listen to other acts they may not have listened to before, they may stumble across my record. Everybody gets to sit, listen, and appreciate. I can hang my hat on my project and know that if you’re in an environment where you’re able to listen to music, and listen to it nice, you’ll enjoy my project.

R&B SONGSTRESS @PORCELANMUSIC DROPS NEW VIDEO FOR 'ACT OUT'...

You’ve heard the smash hit, now it’s time to see the visual that accompanies! Yep, R&B songstress Porcelan has dropped the visual for her new single ‘Act Out’, and you know it’s hot like fire! The "ACT OUTdont-mess-with-me music video was directed by Hotkey Studios and is available now on all streaming and download platforms, via the Made In Memphis Entertainment/Beat Root label imprint.

"The inspiration behind the music video for “Act Out”, was one of my favorite 90's movies “A Thin Line Between Love and Hate", mentions Porcelan. "I wanted to capture the intensity of how broken she was from her past and how he came along and made her think he was different, all while he was playing games the entire time," she adds.

Video

"Act Out" is the follow-up buzz single to PORCELAN's chart-topping hit song, "Lois Lane", which became a Billboard Magazine Top15 record. "Act Out" will be featured on PORCELAN's forthcoming debut album, "Mood Ring", to be released this Summer. The in-your-face single was written by PorcelanHamilton HardinDenarious Holmes and produced by Hamilton Hardin.

PORCELAN has just been announced as one of the Brand Ambassadors for PZI Denim by Lisa Raye. "I am truly honored and humbled for this awesome partnership with Lisa Raye. As a bottom-heavy girl myself, sometimes its a challenge finding the right denim that fits right and holds it all in and PZI by Lisa Raye does just that...so the product speaks to me," mentions Porcelan.

ABOUT PORCELAN
Her name is PORCELAN!

Recording artist and songwriter, born and Raised in the Westwood area of South Memphis, TN. is today's contemporary urban/R&B “It Girl”.

PORCELAN couldn’t help but ultimately pursue her musical aspirations, having immediately absorbed her historic musical surroundings from a young age while growing up in a family of instinctively musical people. “I don’t really remember it being anything I heard on the radio; I really m remember it being my family, like my Mom singing,” recalls the breakout songstress, when asked about the source of her first musical impression. “My parents are singers and musicians, so at family reunions it was really like `a thing'.

Spurred by the encouragement of a fifth grade teacher who heard her voice early on, along with long car rides with her Mom listening and singing along to the likes of Bobby Womack, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye, school-aged PORCELAN found herself auditioning and performing for school graduation ceremonies which soon thereafter uncovered another musical gift…writing. “I started writing poetry I middle-school and realized I was good at it,” PORCELAN recounts.

In keeping with that momentum, PORCELAN focused on building her reputation in music circles, doing everything from appearing on BET’s 106th & Park, collaborating on material with super-producer Timbaland, opening for Tank and gaining invaluable performance experience via a three-month tour of China with a cover band. “Doing show bands is totally different from being an original artist, so I had to learn how to entertain in that realm. Even though I was new to it, I started being around a lot of seasoned people who showed me the ropes."

PORCELAN soon found herself in the studio with David Porter and fellow Made In Memphis songwriters/producers Hamilton Hardin and DeNarious Holmes recording her smoothed-out adult R&B debut single “The Real Thing Don’t Change” (along with “The One” and “Can You Hear Me Now”), which soon thereafter facilitated notable and buzz-worthy live bookings at SXSW (South By Southwest) and Essence music festivals. Once audience members and radio programmers increasingly grew aware of her simultaneously promoted EP, response to her second single release – the infectiously sumptuous beat ballad, “Lois Lane” – PORCELAN found her dream unfolding as she made her way up the Billboard R&B chart straight into the Top 15.

While newfound fans await the forthcoming debut album, "Mood Ring", scheduled to be released later this spring, a steady-on-her-grind PORCELAN delivered her first Christmas album, "Joyful Hearts: A Season of Love", this past Holiday season. A most contemporary-sounding Christmas set which further displayed her knack for composing vibrantly soulful songs amidst thoroughly-pleasing, contemporary production.

R&B SUPERSTAR NOEL GOURDIN RETURNS WITH NEW SINGLE, "LOVIN' UP (YOU)....

It’s official! R&B Superstar Noel Gourdin is back with a new single, titled “Loving Up (YOU)”, and it’s on fire.

LOVIN' UP (YOU) is a wonderful mid-tempo track that has a great 90’s R&B/HipHop vibe (think Stevie Wonder/Michael Jackson “I Can't Help It”). There is an undeniable hypnotic groove that Noel Soulfully navigates through in his own inimitable style that will have the listener toe tapping and finger popping. The song was written by Noel Gourdin and Canita Rogers and produced by Tone Jonez and Regi Myrix.

I wanted to record a light hearted record for the project, because Marquis Green and I had written some pretty heavy-toned records (Strugglin', Low Down) prior to me writing "Lovin' UP:", mentions Noel. "It pretty much tells the story of how in love this man is with his woman, and how he assures her that he's so deeply enthralled with her that he has no thoughts nor desires for "Lovin' UP" anyone else but her", he adds. "I am now in an amazing new relationship, and I'm incredibly happy. So I'd say that she played a huge role in the inspiration and motivation department for me to create this record as I did”.

ABOUT NOEL GOURDIN
Soul and R&B singer Noel Gourdin emerged on the music scene with his number one hit song “The River” which stayed on the Urban AC charts at number one for 15 weeks! Noel’s childhood was not a traditional one; he was born in Brockton, MA but spent his summers with family in Pachuta, Mississippi. The result is a man who is city to the heart but southern to the soul! Noel scored a deal with Sony Music at age 24, but his first exposure to the vocal arts came in church and he was introduced to the larger audience of soul music by his father (who introduced him to the classics, such as Otis Redding) and his brother (who turned him on to the sounds of new jack swing). Noel is influenced by classic soul as well as the contemporary sounds of R&B and hip-hop. Making his music is a seamless blend of each genre. “Listening to so much music from so many different eras really helped me put my style together,” explains the gifted singer- songwriter.

In 2004 Gourdin contributed the song “Family Reunion” to the soundtrack of the movie “The Cookout”. In 2005 a meeting with Sony Music led to a summer showcase which landed Noel on Sony Music’s roster and resulted in his 2008 debut album "After My Time", which is a refreshing mix of timeless R&B music with a modern, youthful feel which produced his number one hit song “The River.” The album is armed with Noel’s commanding rich vocals and a solid collection of intimate, soulful songs. The hit song, “The River” was featured on the soundtrack to the film, “Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins.” Noel’s sophomore album “Fresh: The Definition” released in 2011 was filled with refreshing blend of live instrumentation, organic production, and lyrical content which is reminiscent of classic old soul yet relatable to current music and lyrics. “Fresh: The Definition” produced “Beautiful, “which reached the Top 10 on the Urban AC charts.

In 2012 Noel finished a successful run of sold outs shows in the UK. He released his third project entitled “City Heart, Southern Soul” on February 18, 2014. “City Heart, Southern Soul” is a musical expression of Noel’s life. “The project was a culmination of creating and molding Retro-Relevant music, with underappreciated producers and writers,” says Gourdin. The project produced hits like “FOXXXY” which made top 10 on UK’s urban radio soul charts and was also in heavy rotation on UK radio. The single “Don’t You Wanna” was featured on VH1’s “Love and Hip Hop – Atlanta”. “Heaven Knows” is another one of Noel’s singles that quickly became a fan favorite. Noel is also featured on Brian Culbertson’s single “You're My Music" off the “Dreams” album which also earned heavy radio rotation.

The most recent endeavor the singer-songwriter has undertaken is his role in creating the title track to a new film. The name of the film is "Love n Success", written by the Baz Brothers in Atlanta, GA. As Noel tells it, “I watched the film and it really made me think how tough it is to know when love is true. I feel I was able to capture the essence of the film, so I developed a basic idea for the track. Thanks to assistance with Ty Allen Macklin and Charles Brandon, I finished writing the record, then recorded it at GoldStreet Music. We later got Aaron Stapler to lay down the guitar and that was that!”

“I grew up on music that had meaning and it’s still around today; music was made in the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. That’s something that my father had me listening to. I just want to be a positive black role model as well as a role model for anyone, regardless of their ethnic background as my music transcends across all color lines. It’s really important for me to be respectful and have music that can speak to the masses, from a two year old to your Great GrandMAMA! Musical integrity is extremely important to me, for when I leave the industry, my musical legacy is what I want to be remembered for..... timeless, real and soulful music.”

FEATURE: It’s a family affair With tamika scott!

A FAMILY AFFAIR

with TAMIKA SCOTT

We’ve watched over the past few years as the ladies of XSCAPE have plotted, and ultimately executed their long-awaited comeback to entertainment and music. Fans have been equally amazed at how the ladies stepped back into the forefront and dominated with their latest release. Now that they’ve fully promoted that project, each member is working in their own personal endeavors, which brings us to Tamika Scott.

As one fourth of the R&B supergroup XSCAPE, Scott has built a reputation that has carried her more than two decades in the music industry. She came to us a mere teenager eager to become a household name, and she’s done just that. In that time from her beginnings until now, she has literally become more than a woman. Scott is now a mother of three, a glam-mother as she affectionately refers to herself, and a loving wife. Making her solo debut even more power is the fact that her entire family has come along for the journey, hence her aptly-titled project, FAMILY AFFAIR. Husband Darnell Winston appears on ‘Almost Over”, while daughters Oshun Love & Young Niyah both appear on ‘Reflection’. Other guests include Q. Parker of 112 fame, and production from RL of R&B group Next! FAMILY AFFAIR is led by the powerful single, ‘Go Outside in the Rain’.

We were blessed with the amazing opportunity of connecting with Tamika to discuss the new project. She gives us an in-depth look behind the EP tracks, while we also talk the history and influence of XSCAPE and more. This feature stands for so much more than most because not only has Scott been a major influence on so many in the entertainment industry, she’s been just that for me as well as a journalist. While my career choice is far different, I recognize that I definitely wouldn’t be where I am, and may not have been so inspired to pursue media without seeing those like her pushing to be such a force throughout the urban community. I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to connect you all with Mrs. Tamika Scott!

U.G. Digital Mag: Hey, Mrs. Tamika Scott?

Tamika Scott: Hey, how you doing?

U.G. Digital Mag: I’m doing outstanding. How are you?

Tamika Scott: Man, I’m doing so good right now…

U.G. Digital Mag: OK, so listen here…. First thing’s first; I just need like two seconds to just fan out over you, because I’ve been doing media for so long, an you, as well as the ladies of Xscape, I’ve not only followed you, but I’ve known for all these years that I’ve wanted to connect with you…

Tamika Scott: Awww…

U.G. Digital Mag: I’m definitely followed, but just hearing the music, and watching you maneuver through this game. All the things you’ve shown and taught us all. I love it! I’m so happy, and grateful for the opportunity. I know you do so much for Tyler Perry and the plays, and I am just a true follower. I’m happy with how far you’ve come and your perseverance. I had to get that out

Tamika Scott: Alright now, now that’s the true meaning of [singing] “Is my living in vain”…

U.G. Digital Mag: Yes! exactly. I was in high school when that dropped, but thank you.

Tamika Scott: Thank you. I’m so glad you followed your passion!

U.G. Digital Mag: Right. But it’s people like you, people like Kandi, Tiny, and your sister LaTocha, who have given me that “umph” to get out there and push for my dreams. I’m watching the likes of you doing it. That’s all I’m doing at this stage of my life is the things that make me happy.

Tamika Scott: You have to. You have to. It’s very important, and I’m so glad. Thank you.

U.G. Digital Mag: For sure. So listen, I know we have a short time. I really like to make my conversations more personal, and I love to get perspectives on things that are happening in everyday life with everyone out here like your fans. Obviously the world is struggling through this stuff with the coronavirus. In what ways does that affect you and your family, especially with you working to promote a project?

Tamika Scott: The positive side of it is spending time with my family. Since 2017, We have been nonstop since Xscape cane back together. This is giving me quality time to spend with my family, my husband, my children, my glam-babies, and I love that time. The time itself is confusing, and I hate watching the new because of your president!!!

U.G. Digital Mag: Nope! Don’t do that! Don’t even!! [laughing]

Tamika Scott: [laughing]. Every time he say something, I’m just like what?

U.G. Digital Mag: It’s funny with you ladies because when you toured for your most recent project, I was living in the Columbus, GA area, and wanted so bad to come to the show, but I had to work and couldn’t get the time off. How has it been out here for you to be touring now just for your own project?

Tamika Scott: I’m loving it because I’m very personable. I love to talk to the fans, and I love to hear their stories. I love it. The only difference is you don’t have three other girls to fall back on. Usually I can say Tiny you answer this, Kandi you answer that, and Tocha, you get that. Now, it’s just me. I’m loving the independence, because I am the Bobby brown. I love to jump in the audience, change the script, or pull somebody on stage.

U.G. Digital Mag: Right. I see enough of your shows on YouTube!, and you’re definitely fun-loving. You get out there and have a ball, which everybody loves. I think it’s dope. You’ve done so well though. ‘Go Outside in the Rain’ has done so weak, and in general, the project has done well. You have your daughters on there, your husband, and Q. Parker. It’s an amazing project.

IMG_2465.jpeg

A FAMILY AFFAIR

WITH TAMIKA SCOTT

Tamika Scott: I love R&B, and I wanted to definitely bring back R&B with substance and the songs that mean something, the songs that make you feel good. Something that’s relatable. FAMILY AFFAIR is really my life story, and I’m being an open book. It talks about me being hurt in a prior relationship. It’s me saying “what the hell was I thinking” once I woke up. ‘Go Outside in the Rain’ talks about the pain I endured, ending this long-term relationship. I just wanted to go outside in the rain and disguise the pain. I didn’t want you to see the tears. From that to falling in love again and meeting my current husband, learning how to trust again. The song ‘All of Me’, featuring Q Parker, and produced by RL of Next, talks about me being scared. I want to give ti to you, but I’m afraid. Then I have an inspirational song called ‘Almost Over”, that helped me in a recent situation where I had a hysterectomy, but my doctor messed up, and I ended up having four more procedures to correct the issues with that. I was in a dark place with that. I wrote this song some years ago, and my husband played it while I was in the hospital, and it lifted my spirits when I listened. It was saying hold on, and you’ve come too far to turn back now. Keep your head up, lift your head up high, you don’t have to worry. What you’re going through won’t last. The storm is almost over. I had to breathe it, and live it. I put this on the EP to inspire others going through things, and to teach them how to dance through the storm. At the end of the storm is a rainbow. FAMILY AFFAIR is about my family. I’m a family oriented person. I wanted the world to see what we do in the house. We’re singing and rapping. My daughters are on there. My husband is on there. It’s a big family affair.

U.G. Digital Mag: I think it’s truly amazing, and I love the fact that your entire family is united in the process. I love that you address the things in your life, and the things your fans are experiencing. I just spent two years going through what I felt was like the ugliest divorce and it sucks.

Tamika Scott: wow.

U.G. Digital Mag: It’s amazing though that you cover a lot of that. I was in a place where it’s like what is there purpose. It’s amazing how music touches lives, and the ways it hits you. I benefit from it, and I know so many others do too. I can only say thank you for what you do. How does it feel to know your fans not only pull from your music for their lives, but the fact they have continued to follow you for all these years?

Tamika Scott: It’s definitely a blessing. Everyday I wake up I thank GOD for this life I live, and for following my dreams. It wasn’t easy. It’s a lot of struggles, and a lot of things we went through to get here. Back in the day, we was like lil’ boys in baggy pants. It was about the talent. That’s what set us apart, and that allowed us to have longevity. It’s a blessing and we don’t play with it. It’s not about the money. The money is good, but if you can help somebody achieve their goals, somebody going through hard times, talking about love, and touching lives, it means we did our jobs. I’m grateful and thankful.

U.G. Digital Mag: It’s like you said. You gave us the talent. You weren’t only about selling sex. Obviously you had those songs, but you also had heavy hitters that were otherwise. I think back to the first album, and I can remember playing ‘Tonight” all the time, or on the second album, the intro and outro ‘All About Me’, or my favorite song on the album was always “Keep it on the Real”,

Tamika Scott: Really?

U.G. Digital Mag: My tidal playlist opens with “All About Me”, lol.

Tamika Scott: You got’ have to add ‘Go Outside in the Rain’ to that playlist baby!

U.G. Digital Mag: Let me tell you, it’s already there, along with All of Me, and Reflection. I love that your daughters are on there. All of Me really stands out to me. I think you’ve done an amazing job. What’s next?

Tamika Scott: Yep, that’s next. Getting in the studio, collaborating. The main producer I’ve been working with its Wirlie Morris. He did ‘Go Outside in the Rain’. I’m working on a web series right now. I love e introducing artists to the world. I love being in the background. With XSCAPE, we have out bio pic and we’ll have new music coming.

U.G. Digital Mag: I love it, and the world loves it. Talk a little more about the web series, XSCAPE THE MIC…

Tamika Scott: I wanted people to see Tamika Scott outside of XSCAPE. I’m a mother, wife, mom-ager, I’m a glam-ma, and I’m a cook. You’ll see me in different elements. I love black love, and I believe in it. Even being successful in my career, I know how to be submissive in my relationship. It shows my vulnerability and strength.

U.G. Digital Mag: Thank you so much. This has been amazing. I know we only had a short time, but it was more than enough and truly awesome. I’ve spent a lifetime it seems, wanting to connect and GOD made that happen. I’m immensely grateful to you for your time.

Tamika Scott: Thank you for taking time out of your schedule for little ol’ me.

U.G. Digital Mag: Listen here, My schedule ain’t nothing like yours [laughing]. But you have inspired me in so many ways, and I thank you.

Tamika Scott: Keep doing it!

The in-your-face single is a powerful collaboration with Hip-hop rising star LIA GIVENCHY as she and T BARZ boldly take on the points of views of being strong females in the Hip-hop industry, and how both of these underrated artists manage to stand out from the crowd. T BARZ, from Alabama, and Givenchy, from Flatbush Brooklyn, are creating flow and making their mark as female rappers and emcees. The track has the modern sound of Meek Mill blended with the style of Lauryn Hill. Their message is both powerful and positive".
